Abstract

This article introduces the Climate Action and Advocacy on the Airwaves (CA3) project as an innovative approach for integrating Green Social Work (GSW) principles into social work education through experiential learning and community engagement. Developed through a partnership between the Transforming the Field Education Landscape (TFEL) project and the CJSW radio at the University of Calgary, the CA3 project sought to raise awareness, foster public participation, and increase the visibility of climate action initiatives in Southern Alberta. Grounded in a GSW framework, the project offered social work practicum students opportunities for practice-based learning through the creation of a climate action podcast series, the development of seventeen fact sheets on the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the coordination of a climate action exhibition.

Students engaged in applied research, community collaboration, and storytelling to produce eleven podcast episodes and seventeen fact sheets. The podcasts are broadcast on community radio and available on digital platforms (CJSW Radio, Apple podcast, Spotify). This paper discusses the pedagogical design and outcomes of the CA3 project, highlights student leadership and reflective practice, and explores the implications for advancing climate justice and sustainability within social work education and practice.
